My son made a sim for me to play with. I had such a hard time getting started. They needed a house but my son made a teen with a kitten. I had to come up with a backstory just to build somewhere for them to live. Below is what I came up with as I was building.
The story goes that Kai came out to their parents as non-binary and it did not go well. Kai’s parents kicked them out with little more than the clothes on their back. After a bit of time on the street, they were able to get in contact with their globetrotting grandmother (their father's mother). She was a godsend but rarely around so it was hard to get a hold of her. Kai couldn’t believe their luck when she said that her house just became vacant and she needed a new tenant. Kai was even able to bring the kitten they made friends with on the street with them. Now Kai lives in San Sequoia with their kitten Fred. Grandma has no plans of returning home anytime soon and who better to take care of her home than her grandchild who needed a home. She does “charge” them rent but it’s at a reduced rate and it’s mostly to pay the utilities and the taxes. (sadly grandma only remembered to reduce the rent after the first round of bills so the power and water got shut off and the fireplace was repoed)
#now the question is do I make a grandma for them#cause what if grandma occasionally came home#Kai would have to sleep on the couch bc the house is just one bedroom with a tiny office#I think it would be fun but I don’t know if I want to deal with making another sim#thank god for mccc#i'm playing vanilla lite and i forgot how steep the bills can be 😅#simblr#the sims 4#black simmer#sim: Kai Thao

lord huron lyric prompts, "🔥 of all the strangers you’re the strangest that i’ve seen" and/or "🎄 and the truth is stranger than my own worst dreams " <3
Thanks for the prompt!!
Lord Huron lyric prompts
content warnings: sad. allusions to self-harm. implied past violation of boundaries. stays sad until the end but that's because the resolution is going to be in another prompt fill from this list
and the truth is stranger than my own worst dreams (The Watcher x Devil of Caroc, 1883 words)
In Mae's worst nightmares, she's happy.
There's blood on her hands, more often than not, and the air is full of screams; a different voice each time, some poor stranger at the mercy of her skill with a variety of torture implements.
Their faces are never clear to her. They do not matter. The only one who does is the man observing her work: the same face, the same attire, the same shadowed eyes as she saw in the ruins of Cilant Lîs.
The Grandmaster.
She doesn't know if he truly looked the exact same back then, or if it's just memories bleeding from one life into the other.
She does know that, thousands of years ago, she loved him.
Well, he loved him. She was a man, back then; an elf, and some kind of magic user, she's pretty certain.
He loved Thaos so much that it made him sick.
She can feel it, in those dreams: the overwhelming rush of catching just a sliver of that coveted attention, the incredible effort it took to keep his hands from shaking, the ever-present gnawing at the back of his mind, asking himself how can I get more.
It was all he cared about. The cause, the actual purpose of that torture — those were just meaningless details to him. It got him a moment of attention and a few words of praise, and so he was more than happy to do it again, and again, and again.
And now Mae gets to watch it happen every time she makes the mistake of falling asleep.
It's not the gore or the screaming that echoes in her mind once she'd jolted awake; it's not the awareness of just how many of those interrogations she'd conducted that makes her sit still in her bedding and stare into the darkness, wishing she could purge the memory of it from her mind.
It's the joy.
It's the feeling of something beautiful, of something wonderful just around the corner, there for the taking if you're brave enough to reach for it.
Never mind what "reaching for it" actually entails.
It's Maerwald's voice, of all things, that rattles around in her skull as she covers her face with her hands and breathes, fighting the urge to claw at her own eyes, to claw that feeling out.
For love of the gods. The gods' love. For their love.
She understands now the old Watcher's wretched wailing, the way he clutched himself and stooped his shoulders as if he was trying to disappear into himself, to fold his bony frame into nothingness.
For their love.
For his love.
Mae's never been in love, in this life. As the dreams continue, she grows more and more certain it should stay that way.
If that's what love is, she doesn't want it.
If that's what love is, no one should want it, but least of all her, now that she knows what her soul is capable of.
*
"What was it like, to have your soul thrust into a cold metal vessel?" Zahua asks, as they trudge through the snow somewhere in the Russetwood.
"Bend over and I'll show you," the Devil of Caroc snaps back.
Despite herself, Mae laughs.
It's not really what she says, it's just — gods, it's hard to explain.
She'd probably say the exact same thing, in Devil's place; maybe that's it.
There's a tiny creak as the bronze golem turns her head to look at her, and then Zahua makes an attempt to explain himself, and Devil's attention goes back to that.
They keep walking. In the obscuring safety of her hood and her height, Mae allows herself to smile.
There's something comforting about knowing that she's not the angriest person in the group anymore.
*
By the time they make the journey back to Caed Nua, Mae has to admit that she's at least a little interested.
It worries her, at first — that's the first time someone had caught her eye since the nightmares started — but after giving it some thought, she comes to the conclusion that it's probably safe.
It feels nothing like her dreams. It's light and fun, and it's not going anywhere anyway; with her creeping insanity and Devil's... well, everything, both of them have bigger things to worry about than chasing each other.
A laugh here, a compliment there. It's nothing special, but she's kind of surprised that Devil's been going along with it.
It's not the mechanical knowledge Mae had pilfered from Galvino's departed soul. If Devil just wanted that, she wouldn't have bothered with flirting.
Gods know what she's getting out of it, but whatever it is, Mae's glad.
Maybe they can just have this for a while. The world won't end just because of a few words exchanged between friends.
*
The screwdriver feels both alien and familiar in her grip.
Mae's never done this before, but she remembers doing it hundreds of times. She can conjure up an image of what's supposed to happen if she closes her eyes: a set of six screws undone, Devil's chest plate popping out, exposing a mess of machinery that makes her dizzy even to envision.
In that image, it's Galvino's hands doing the work, not hers. Just like when she calls upon Maerwald's Watcher prowess, it's his hands she envisions gently holding the face of the person he examines for soul sickness.
It's safe to say it's getting crowded in her mind lately, but at least artifice and soul-healing are more useful skills than torture.
Devil's eyes stare up at her, solid black but reflecting the lamplight in a way that makes it look like she has yellow shiny pupils. She's lying perfectly still on that workbench, but Mae sees the essence swirling under the bronze plates and knows that she's not at rest.
Swap the screwdriver for a blade, put Thaos in the corner, and this could just as well be one of her nightmares. There's a part of her that's very aware of that.
"What're you waiting for, an invitation?" Devil asks with a get-it-over-with edge to her tone.
She makes a good point. Mae latches on to that, using that second of delay to regain her balance, pushing the unwelcome thoughts away.
"I am, actually," she says. "May I?"
Devil rolls her eyes with a faint scraping noise.
"Yeah, yeah, just get on with it."
The funny thing is, the ripples of her essence smooth out a little.
Something tells Mae that Galvino never bothered with asking for consent.
*
Doing Devil's maintenance stops being scary after a while.
The first time, Mae's hands are cold with terror the whole way through. About three repetitions later, that's gone; now that she's run through the routine a few times, it's all a matter of keeping her focus and not messing up.
They talk as Mae works, which helps her keep track of how Devil's doing, and forces Devil to pay attention to what Mae's doing, which is good, because the end goal is for her to be able to do it herself.
She's fine with staying for now, but Mae doesn't want to become a tether for her the way Galvino was. If Devil ever decides to leave, she should be able to do so.
Mae knows, by now, that she'll miss her.
Talking to Devil is somehow both easy and precarious. Easy because there's no need to hold back and choose her words like she's used to doing; precarious because it always circles back to them poking and prodding at each other, trying to get a laugh or any reaction, really, and sometimes in chasing that Mae will almost say more than she means to.
She manages, for a while.
Then, one day, they're trying to get something out of Devil's knee joint during a camping stop; a piece of gravel, or something like that, that got lodged in there during a recent fight.
As Mae lifts up her leg, trying to figure out the best way to access the part that's stuck, Devil chuckles and says:
"'Least buy me a drink first."
It's just the kind of quip they'd normally be trading back and forth while Mae works, but her mind is so deep in the problem that she barely processes it.
Not looking up from her attempts to scrape the gravel out, she absentmindedly replies:
"I would, if you could drink it."
Devil goes very still. Even her essence withdraws, sinking deeper beneath the surface like she's trying to retreat into herself.
Mae realizes what just happened, and feels a chill run down her spine.
Oh, gods. Oh, fuck. She'd just said that she - she said that she would, if Devil was still folk.
Now it sounds like she's letting her down, the way some people she'd known would let down an orlan. Sorry, it's just, maybe if you weren't —
Only somehow it's even worse, because it's not if only you weren't born this way, it's if only you hadn't had this done to you.
"Right," Devil says flatly, and looks away. Mae's still stuck staring at her knee, but she can hear her neck creak a little.
Mas has never thought that something other than the nightmares could bring out that claw-your-eyes-out feeling in her, but having Devil think she sees her as lesser than a person still in their own body — that hits the mark.
She swallows, which does nothing to stop her heart from pounding in her throat.
"I mean," Mae says, "It would just be a waste of coppers, you know? Maybe we just skip the drink."
She's not fully sure what's happening to her, but it's in her hands and in her chest and in her throat and in the pit of her stomach, and it feels like being bitten by one of those cave spiders.
She's so preoccupied with that that it takes her a second to notice the shift in Devil's essence, which is that it starts moving again.
Then, she hears a faint, creaky laugh.
"Knew you Goldpact Knights was stingy," Devil says. "Didn't know it was that bad."
Mae manages to laugh through the spider-venom feeling, and say:
"Wait, potions work on you, right? We should get Aloth to brew one that just gets you drunk."
The banter picks back up after that, and a few minutes later she finally gets the pebble out.
Once that's done, Mae walks back to her bedroll, picks up her cloak, and walks off into the brush. Once she's certain she's a reasonable distance away and there's nothing trying to eat her in the immediate vicinity, she curls up at the base of a tree, buries her face in the bunched-up cloak, and bursts into tears.
She cries voicelessly until she feels dizzy — because she'd never want to hurt Devil, because nothing she's learned about her has made Mae like her less, because if there was a way — if she could do anything —
Because she wants to give her everything, but she doesn't have any of the things that Devil actually needs.
She's in love with someone she can't have, just like she was thousands of years ago.
And, if Mae's nightmares are any indication, it's going to make a monster out of her.

The Farfields and it's influence is almost integral to life as we know it. Nearly everything interacts with it and bends the Farfields. There are plenty of examples of large beasts that use magic, as we understand it, such as the Sval'Galvlk, Undrosle, or Banshuma. My favorite, however, happens to be one of the smallest beasts; the Songling.
The Songling is a tiny horned beetle with a slight iridescent shell. The songlings gather together in groups called choirs. These beetles, which are seemingly mundane, have a unique ability. The shell of the songling vibrates when exposed to Resonance and releases a single auditory tone. The pitch depending on the size of the songling and the amount of Resonance.
Due to this unique trait, Songlings have been breed and sold all across Thaos to any mage or arcane college that wishes to avoid the damage that Resonance causes in large amounts. Rune-Smiths that specialize in Resonance dispersal will often use songlings to locate pockets of unchecked Resonance
Without songlings, the safe practice of magic would be nearly impossible without large monetary investments into runic safeguards
On the opposite spectrum are dragons. The seemingly immortal beasts feed upon Resonance, both natural and forced. The Resonance they consume feed the dragons and fuel their breath attacks and regional effects they emit. There is no greater threat to man than a territorial dragon with a Leyline beneath it.
-Excerpt from Arcane Biology, page 7. Found on floor 7, section 429 B
Songlings grow quiet around dragons and dragonkin. Even being around a dragon's organs or scales will quiet one. Perhaps there is another book here that elaborates on dragon biology, after all the Dragon Hunters have devoted their lives to the butchery of dragons.

UMC Shadowing Day 2 (7/17) | Michi Batzorigt (USC)
As the days passed, it got harder and harder to wake up for our morning call times, dreading the sound of my alarm and having to take my COVID test before I could get breakfast. Half drowsy, I began to get ready while waiting for the 15 minutes to pass.
When we boarded the bus, I was surprised by how small our group had become. Instead of the usual two buses, we were barely filling half of a single bus. Our group schedules had also been rearranged, but I wasn’t too upset because I was in pediatric CV today and we would be observing open-heart surgeries at the hospital.
When we arrived, the nurse led us into the CV department’s meeting room where one of the surgeons gave us a detailed explanation of the patient admission process and the common surgeries they perform, with Dr. Thao translating. We then visited a patient scheduled for heart surgery that day before heading to the changing rooms to change into scrubs. The shoe-changing ritual was a surprise—different slippers or crocs were required depending on the area to maintain sterile environments. We also swapped into deep blue scrubs, distinguishing us from the doctors. After tying up our hair, donning hair nets, and scrubbing our hands, we were ready to meet up with the rest of the group.
The doctor led us to a room with supplies and computers for the two ORs in front of us. The OR to our left was mid-surgery, while the room to our right was still prepping. We took turns entering the OR in pairs and peered over the anesthesiologists’ area to catch a glimpse of the action. The first surgery had a tiny incision, making it hard to see much. We then shifted to the preparation area of the next surgery, crowding as close to the walls as possible to stay out of the way, yet eager to catch every detail.
We stood as close to the walls as possible, trying not to get in the way, yet eager to catch a glimpse of the procedure. Huddled together, we adjusted our angles to see the anesthesiologist intubate the patient through a small camera. When the surgery finally began, the lead surgeon kindly led us towards the anesthesiologist’s area and brought over stools so we could get a better look as they opened the patient’s chest. Each of us took turns stepping on the stools, peeking at the work of the surgeons. I was both amazed and a bit nervous when they pulled out the drill to breach the sternum. Witnessing such heavy equipment and the sheer force required to separate the sternum was astonishing and unnerving.
Just as they reached the heart, we were told it was almost 11 am and time to head back. Although we were disappointed we couldn’t stay longer, we all agreed to take last turn on the stools to peek at the beating heart before changing back into our regular clothes and meeting everyone in the lobby.

Đối thủ đội Việt Nam gây sốc trước World Cup nữ 2023
Although still recovering from injury, Vivianne Miedema, an experienced player, has unexpectedly been called up to the Dutch team. This is the opponent of the Vietnamese team in Group E at the 2023 World Cup finals according to the information on https://okchoi44.com/ .
At the 2023 Women's World Cup, the Netherlands, the defending runner-up, is one of three opponents of the Vietnamese team in Group E. The match between these two teams will take place in the final round of the group stage on January 1. 8. Before that, the Vietnamese team will face the defending champion USA on July 22 and Portugal on July 27.

A Book Review of "You've Reached Sam"
Dustin Thao's debut book, "You've Reached Sam," is a heartbreaking and exquisitely written work of fiction. This narrative deals with love, sorrow, and the strength of relationships that go beyond physical existence. Readers are captivated from start to finish by Thao's riveting story thanks to its sensitive depiction of bereavement and the challenges of moving on.
The story revolves around Julie Wu, a senior in high school who is saddened by the untimely passing of her lover, Sam. When Julie stumbles onto Sam's voicemail on his phone while grieving and trying to accept her loss, she makes an unexpected connection. She decides to leave messages for Sam in the hopes that their discussions would help her find comfort and closure after this chance discovery.
The depths of Julie's suffering and her desire to cling to Sam's memories are captured in Thao's language, which is descriptive and loaded with real emotion. Readers may identify with Julie's problems and feel the weight of her loss because of the realistic and moving way in which sorrow is depicted. Julie examines her feelings, faces her regrets, and finally finds the strength to go on through her texts to Sam.
Character development is one of the book's finest assets. As she struggles with her loss and looks for a means to deal with her new reality, Julie makes for a sympathetic and realistic heroine. The supporting characters, who each bear their own losses, such as Sam's family and Julie's closest friend Patty, give the narrative depth and richness. The difficulties of relationships and the effects of loss on those left behind are expertly portrayed by Thao.
The plot is further enhanced by the use of Vietnamese culture throughout the narrative. Incorporating cultural allusions, customs, and family dynamics with ease, Thao gives readers a peek of Julie's ancestry and how it affects her life. This investigation into identity and cultural background gives the story depth and improves the sincerity of the characters' experiences.
The novel's pace is carefully considered, allowing the plot to develop gradually while preserving a feeling of urgency and emotional intensity. By skillfully spotlighting significant events in Julie and Sam's relationship in flashbacks, Thao deepens the characters' bond and emphasizes the importance of it. The incorporation of technology, such as voicemails and text messages, gives the connection between the characters a more modern feel and improves its realism.
There are times when key story events in "You've Reached Sam" feel foreordained or unduly familiar, despite the fact that the book is exquisitely written and emotionally stirring. These tiny flaws do not, however, materially diminish the story's overall effect.
In conclusion, "You've Reached Sam" is a touching and moving debut that examines themes of love, sorrow, and the strength of human connection. This is a riveting and emotional trip that will resonate with readers because to Dustin Thao's descriptive writing and well-drawn characters. This book is a tribute to the strength of love and how it can survive both life and death.

Story Beats~
1. Every morning, Thao, a kind and gentle old man, lovingly tends to the vibrant green plants that fill his cozy, sunlit home.
2. One day, as Thao prepared to leave his home, he glances at a stack of papers that lay haphazardly on the kitchen counter. At the top is a letter from his family overseas, requesting that he return home. Beneath it lay a plane ticket in his name.
3. Thao ponders the letter for a moment, then dons his trusty NYC hat and “Thank You” bag and sets out to work.
4. He lights up his restaurant and begins filling baskets with fresh produce for the day.
5. Sara, Thao’s beloved mentee enters the restaurant, gifting Thao a mango from her bag.
6. The rest of the coworkers enter, greeting Thao warmly.
7. As the day transitioned to night, Thao returned home to tend to his plants once more. In the peaceful atmosphere of his home, he found solace and comfort in the simple act of nurturing his beloved greenery.
8. As Thao looks at the letter again, his heart is heavy.
9. Solemnly, he begins to pack all his plants into a wagon. In which he pulls to the restaurant the next morning.
10. Sara is the first to arrive and when she does, Thao gifts her his favorite plant and a letter. She tries to read it, but he stops her.
11. The rest of the coworkers arrive, and Thao gives them each a plant.
12. Cut to the next morning the tiny home is flooded with light, but it is empty of plants and life.
13. Sara arrives at the restaurant, but it’s dark. She looks confused.
14. She opens the note that Thao gave her and her expression changes the further she reads.
15. As a new day dawns, Thao's coworkers bring their own plants to the restaurant. Together, they worked to create a beautiful and thriving garden.
16. Closing image: a wooden sign that reads: Thao’s Garden

Does anyone in my life still have an essence? Am I all alone?
‘Sometimes the essence wants to see for itself’
I was heading to TAFE but on the way there I run into Thao and she said she needed me. Really needs me. That life is not the same without me and everything is monotone and boring without another essence to talk to. I said I know, but I had to tell her that I don’t have time. I can’t keep up with anyone anymore and I really like her as a person but I’m focusing on myself. I said ‘I think you’re a really amazing person but I can’t hang out with you all the time, maybe once a month’. She was happy with that but I only said the once a month thing to appease her. She continued on saying that her and her family don’t have many friends. I don’t know that I meant any of the things I was saying, I just wanted her to leave me alone. I even said said to her that next month I basically busy 6 days ad week, 3 days at TAFE, 2 days at work and 1 day volunteering and so I’ll be really busy. My TAFE was about to start at 10:00am but she was talking to me in the corridor until 10:27am, in the end I had to leave her and I went inside the classroom. We were all cramped together in a tiny room staring at the projector on the white board, like drones. I could tell everyone was an NPC. It was the same teacher that we have for another subject, someone lacklustre and passionless. I wished it was a different teacher to switch things up a bit. Everything felt so repetitious and boring.
I don’t think this is about Thao having an essence, it’s about me saying no to people I don’t want to spend time with because I’m better served not to hang out with holograms. If she had an essence, wouldn’t I be jumping to spend time together? It’s like with SM, I can’t help but admit that I can’t wait to see him... When we message, it doesn’t feel like a chore, I WANT to talk to him. I barely know how much time passes. My god, I want to talk to him....??? I WANT to be near him???? Even when we are not talking... Would I want that, be interested in that, from a hologram?

Mimi didn’t have many friends in her building. She wanted to feel grateful, she really did. Being hired for a top newspaper in New York was something of her wildest dreams, even if it was just for a tiny fashion column that often got shoved to one of the very last pages. Seeing her work in print and doing what she was passionate about was enough for her, but sometimes it was hard to stay positive — being the only girl on her floor. The men here didn’t really respect her, often mistaking her for the coffee girl or making comments under their breath about how she was in the way (Mind you, she was sat at her desk.)
So everyday at 12, when all the men on her floor — whether they wrote for the sports column or the news column — would come together and head out for lunch at the local bistro, Mimi would escape to the roof and eat her sandwich she’d packed from home. Cheese and cucumber, everyday. Sometimes a chicken sandwich, sometimes a left over half of her meatball marinara sandwich from the night before (If she was running late in the morning of course.) It was a moment of peace for her, no loud obnoxious voices barking orders, no sniggering man in a tie leering over her shoulder, no boss telling her that her language was too ‘frou frou’ and ‘girly’ the way he had so kindly put it. Just peace. The building was tall, so the sound of the chaotic city below was dimmed to simply being a pretty view with less noise, the occasional airplane droning up above and —
A crash and a thud sounded from the other side of the roof followed by a yelp and Mimi jumped, sandwich nearly falling out of her hand as she stood up and turned around. Whatever had fallen was obstructed by the machinery and pipes that sat in the centre of the rooftop and Mimi placed her sandwich back in its foil and dusted her skirt free of crumbs, preparing to apologise to whoever had come looking for her for being up here. She pat her sides for pockets on instinct, looking for her phone to check the time. Had she been late back from her lunch break? She was only three bites into her sandwich, how had she let time pass her by?
Her suspicions were rejected when her girlfriend Thao, donning her infamous Spider costume stepped out from behind the obstruction sheepishly, rubbing her side where she’d clearly fallen on with her mask in her hand. “Not the easiest land.” She complained and Mimi smiled.
“Thao!” She clasped her hands together coming closer.
“Yeah, yell my true identity for the entirety of New York to hear why don’t you?” She quipped in a deadpan, not really caring too much as she knew there was no one around to hear.
“Says the girl with her mask off.” Mimis voice was now muffled as Thao had let her throw her arms around her and she pat her back, looking her over when she stepped back. “Cute work outfit.” She teased at the blouse and pencil skirt— knowing it was not what she’d rather be wearing. Mimi rolled her eyes, cheeks darkening to a light pink as her hands folded over her stomach, a subconscious attempt to cover herself.
“What are you doing here? I missed you.” Mimi fiddled with her manicure.
“Missed you too, that’s actually why I’m here. I’ve decided it’s take your girlfriend to work day.” She smiled, as if trying to sell her point by dazzling her with pearly whites. Mimi raised a well kept eyebrow.
“I think my boss would have a heart attack AND a stroke if I brought a superhero into the office. I’m not sure I want that kind of attention.” She crossed her arms.
“Not your work, dummy. My work. Come on, let’s go.” Thao nodded in gesture before walking around the brunette, headed towards the ledge of the roof and Mimi laughed.
“Erm, excuse me. I can’t just up and leave my job in the middle of the day.”
Thao sighed as if it pained her whole body that she was having to wait a second longer for Mimi to follow her and turned around. “So leave a note, tell them you ate something bad and fucked up the girls bathroom and you need to take the rest of the day off.” She shrugged. Mimi contemplated, staring off anxiously as she nibbled on her bottom lip. Thao watched her for a second before walking back over to her, tilting her head a little to be more eye level and resting a hand on her lower cheek. “Hey. You’ve worked at that place how long now? 5 months? You haven’t taken a single sick day since you’ve started. You will be okay.”
Mimi sighed, shaking off the nerves of stepping out of line and glanced down at her sandwich sat in its foil in the sunlight. “What about my lunch. I’m hungry.” She convinced weakly, knowing her heart was now set on leaving for the day.
“I know a place, we’ll get you some food.” Thao stepped back from her girlfriend before heading to the ledge again, pulling her mask back over her face. “Go write that note and then wait for me outside by the back entrance. I’ll meet you there.” She jumped up onto the ledge of the roof and Mimi exhaled with a smile.
“Okay.” She confirmed before blowing her girlfriend a kiss. Thao caught it and the mechanics of the face mask showed her to squint or roll her eyes— something of the sort, but she smiled secretly beneath it, knowing she didn’t really hate the small habit of affection. She stepped off the ledge, falling out of sight.
Mimi was quick to throw away her sandwich and bound down the stairwell back to her empty office where she quickly but neatly wrote an explanation note and signed it off before leaving it on her bosses desk, crossing her fingers that he’d be understanding. She didn’t bother bringing her work bag, as she knew there wasn’t anything in there that she needed to do at home for tomorrow and headed out, pushing the fire escape doors open to the back alley behind the grand tall building.
Mimi looked left, and then looked right— Thao not in sight. She frowned with a small confused pout, and just as she reached for her phone to text her girlfriend and ask for her whereabouts, an arm was suddenly wrapped around her and in the speed of light she was being flung high up amongst the sky scrapers with a scream. She clamped her eyes shut and turned her body to wrap her legs and arms tightly around her girlfriend, who couldn’t control her laugh as she landed the two of them on the ledge of another taller building for a moment.
Thao adjusted Mimi on her hip with an eyeroll at her girlfriends dramatics as she wailed into her shoulder, gripping her incredibly tight. “You’re fine. Let’s go get you some food.”
“I don’t think I can stomach food anymo—” Her response was cut off by a scream as Thao jumped once more off the building, her web flinging the two of them place to place until they arrived on the roof of a building in Queens. She let Mimi down, who wobbled on her shaky legs, fixing her skirt as she caught her breath. “Idiot.” She panted. Thao chuckled, shaking her head before leading Mimi down off the roof.
The two of them sat, now at another view with fresh sandwiches on sourdough bread — still warm from the oven as they basked in the April sun. Thao had called in a favour from the owner of a sandwich place, having saved his son recently from getting in the way of a crazy car wreck.
“I just want them to respect me, you know? I don’t wanna be their friend— but I’d like to be treated like a grown up.” Mimi pouted as she ranted about her workplace, face totally negating her point.
“How about I let you take some pictures of me in the suit on the job, and you can hand it in and say you got an inside scoop or something?” Thao leaned back having finished her sandwich, staring out over the skyline.
“I work the fashion column. Would be kind of random and like… not my area to cover.” Mimi shrugged, picking a stray spinach leaf off the side of her bread.
“So? News is news. You can start a rumour that I’m racist or something I dunno.” Thao flicked a fly off her used sandwich foil.
“What? No!” Mimi laughed and Thao joined in, the two of them discussing what they could do to improve her work situation until their food went down, before Thao got a signal in her suit of a crime nearby. She took Mimi, swinging her out of harms way and yet still giving her a front row seat and she got to watch her girlfriend effortlessly disarm a group of men harassing a teenage boy. She worried watching her fight, but she was skilled — and managed to put the fear of God into grown men so Mimi wasn’t too concerned. They swung out of there before the cops even turned up and continued this routine until it was dark outside, the city lit up by the nightlife.
Rain began to pitter patter against the cool concrete during the humid evening, the two of them jumping along roof tops together and laughing — sharing private jokes and stories until the rain turned into a shower, soaking the two of them through. Mimi groaned, remembering she’d left her keys back at the office — so through the pouring rain Thao swung Mimi back to where she took her from, the alley by the back entrance of her building.
Mimi dropped a metre off the ground where her girlfriend let go of her and she bounced elegantly, looking down at herself and laughed in embarrassment and how her white work blouse was completely soaked through, pink lacy bra clear as day. She shivered at the cold droplets sneaking beneath it, having it buttoned down lower than she remembered it being in the morning when she got ready. She spun around and laughed more when she saw Thaos mask upside down adjacent to her, whole body upside down infact as she hung from a web.
Mimi let her laugh die down and she stepped towards her, faces level with eachother despite one being the wrong way up. “Excuse me spidey.” Mimi spoke quietly, not really sure where it was going as she reached forward and gently folded the bottom of Thaos mask up above her mouth. She leant in and placed a kiss to it, which Thao chased — and perhaps it was the element of rain soaking through every article of clothing on them, and the fact Thao had definitely been enjoying Mimi’s shirt being see through that made them kiss so deeply but they didn’t wait long to include tongue. Breathlessly, they pulled back when Thao begrudgingly received radio input detailing a nearby crime. She pursed her lips in disappointment and Mimi mirrored this as she stepped back a little shameful at how into it she’d gotten. “Dinner tomorrow?” Thao asked as she pulled her mask back down and Mimi smiled, smitten.
“Definitely.”
Just like that, she had disappeared into the night once more.
